I do not like watching people getting killed, I hate horror, slasher or anything considered in that genre. Hitchcock to me is none of the above. Suspense is a great element in film and Hitchcock gives us tons of it. We receive suspense through sound, editing, miss-en-scene etc.

Psycho is especially rich when it comes to sound and editing. From the scene when Marion is driving out of town with the money, she imagines conversations between all the people she is leaving behind effected by her actions. The suspense created by this is so capturing because we can imagine how serious the situation is because we all have experienced it, we do something and in our minds we play out the consequences. The audience is not sure if these conversations are happening or will happen or already happened even though we are aware of the space and time we still are confused, intrigued, and can not wait to find out what is really going to happen.

The shower scene shows so little but yet shows so much. For a viewer like myself who can not stand blood and gore it gave me just the right amount visually and an abundance of everything else.

The great thing about Psycho is that it is such an amazing movie that even people who aren’t fans of the horror genre can really enjoy it. It’s just all around well put together. Though I have met a few people who are to squeamish to handle it haha, I guess there can never be a movie that satisfys EVERYONE.

The shower scene will always be remembered as one of the coolest scenes of all time. You are right on, the way it is edited is so fantastic! And not much has to be shown at all, our brain kind of fills in the blanks in this choppy sequence & we end up freaking ourselves out – it’s brilliant =D

Haha. I’m not AS squeamish as you say you are, but I am to some extent. (I went to see 127 hours…I don’t reccommend it since you’re that squeamish)
I found the shower scene very well presneted in the sense that it was in small dosages and there was a lot of cuts. I also think that the fact that the film was in black and white makes it less graphic…since the color of blood is a very powerful color and if it was in color it would’ve made it MORE horrifying that it already is. I found it interesting how they were able to do that scene w/o revealing the identity of the “psycho”. All the close-ups made the scene more personal. It was an overal brilliant movie 😀

I’m also pretty squeamish (When I saw 127 Hours, I kept my eyes closed during that one scene), and I also don’t like horror that much (there are some that I enjoy [i.e. the Nightmare on Elm Street movies). Nonetheless, I really enjoyed “Psycho”, despite the fact that it almost scared me to death. The directing of the movie, as well as the music, kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire movie. I found the ending totally unexpected – I never saw it coming at all.

I completely agree. I HATE horror films and gruesome things, but “Psycho” wasn’t any of that. Sure, there were murders, but the film was shot in a way that it didn’t seem traditionally “scary.” I was so nervous when we got the syllabus and I saw “Psycho” was on there. My parents, boyfriend and even grandparents told me it was nothing to be afraid of, and they were right. The suspense kind of freaked me out, but it was okay. I paid more attention to trying to solve the mystery myself and putting all of the pieces together.

I actually loved this film! 🙂
